A novel of madness and murder, not listed in Hubin, wh o cites many titles under the two pseudonyms used by Carlton: Lieutenand Carlton and Bernard Wayde, under which names Carlton evidently wrote numerous books for the cheap Street & Smith series ca.1903. Identified on the back cover as No. 191 in The Mag net Library, April 24, 1901. Listed by Hubin with the longer title: "The Murray Hill Mystery; or, A Man or Wiles." Hubin identifies it as Magnet 191, 1901, and says: "Not NC".   According to Hubin, this one is by Ernest A. Young.  $20.00

Listed by Hubin, giving the fuller title: "The Man at the Window; or, The Girl from Cleveland". He lists it as Magnet 199, 1901. This copy does not bear the second part of the title. According to Hubin, this one is by Frederick William Davis.  $20.00

Published earlier by Newnes in 1901, as: "Jim the penman," the life  story of one of the most astounding criminals that ever lived."  $20.00  

 

30..... Donovan (Dick) [pseudonym of J.E. Muddock]  The Man-Hunter. Stories from the Note-Book of A Detective. By Dick Donovan.  NY: M.J. Ivers, 1888. First American edition.  Original cream pictorial wrappers, lettered in red and illustrated in black & gray. 216pp. + 8pp. ads at rear. Issued as No. 114 in the American Series, Dec. 7, 1888. Remains of ink price stamps on upper front cover and spine, a bit of chipping at e dges, paper browned, a very good copy otherwise. The first edition was published in England by Chatto, 1888. Listed in Hubin, who cites the Chatto edition, and an American edition of 1891. This Ivers edition was re-issued by them in 1902 as No. 28 i n the Ivers' Detective Series. According to Ellery Queen, one of the 125  most important books of detective-crime-mystery short stories.  $450.00

Slight soiling and spotting of cloth, a very good copy in a pictorial dust jacket, wear to edges and some chipping at spine ends. Ownership inscription in pencil, dated 1932. A decent-looking copy. Published in  the UK in 1934 as: MURDER OF MY PATIENT. A film was produced in 1936.  $125.00

34..... Fenn (George Manville)  The Bag of Diamonds.  Chicago: Conkey, [nd - ca.1890]  161pp. + 5pp. publisher's ads at rear. Gray-green decorative cloth designed in dark green & gilt. Some wear to spine, pen mark on front end paper, very good. A popular novel by the prolific Fenn. This book had early American editions by Lovell, Munro, Phoenix, Federal Book Co., Lupton, Arthur Westbrook, Westbury, and of course Conkey. Listed by Hubin, who cites the British edition (Ward, 1887) as the first English edition, and the Lovell, 1887 American edition.  $20.00  

 

35..... Finnemore (John)  The Secret Entrance. Frontispiece by Howard Somerville.  London: Ward, Lock, 1907. First edition.  Dark green decorative cloth designed in light green, red and gilt. Frontispiece. Some light shelf wear; a very bright, handsome copy. The frontispiece has been re-inserted, facing away from instead of toward the title page. Finnemore was the author of numerous historical and travel books, also juvenile fiction. This is a scarce mystery novel, not in Hubin.  $50.00  

 

36..... Fleming (Ian)  Thunderball.  NY: Viking, 1961. First American edition.  Yellow cloth stamped in red. Top edge stained red. A couple of little smudges on rear end paper, very light dust soiling at edges, otherwise a basically fine copy in a slightly chipped, very good dust jacket. The jacket has some rubbing and short te ars at folds, some chipping to the spine ends (not affecting lettering), small stain at the base of the spine, and some small spots on spine (only visible on inside of jacket), but is not faded. Original price of $3.95 on the front flap of the jacke t.  $55.00

Issued as Vol. XXIV, No. 465 in Munro's Seaside Library, February 11, 1879. Considerable wear to spine, piece torn away from bottom of last leaf (affecting ads, but not the text of the book), otherwise about very good. OCLC lists this same edition; likely the first American edition. There was an 1880 edition published by Estes and Lauriat  $50.00

Also published as: "The Fatal Cast" in 19 54; and "Murder Mill" in Australia in 1956.  $25.00  

 

40..... Garrett (William)  The Professional Guest.  NY: Appleton, 1928. First American edition.  Orange cloth lettered in black. Slightly leaned, but a nice clean copy in a slightly worn dust jacket. Some old stains and darkening to the spine of the jacket, light wear to corners, but with the attractive front panel in very nice condition. Jacke t art by Mercer, a striking design. A novel of a young man who goes into business selling "high class society atmosphere" by providing attractive young escorts. Listed in Hubin, who cites the British first edition, published by Lane in the same year . A film was produced by King in 1931.  $125.00

42..... Gilbert (Michael)  The Doors Open.  NY: Walker, (1962). First American edition.  Light blue cloth, spine lettered in dark blue. Slightly leaned, but a very nice, clean copy in a very slightly worn dust jacket, with the price corner clipped. The third in the Inspector Hazelrigg series, and the author's third mystery, originally p  ublished in England by Hodder in 1949.  $45.00

Slight spotting of cloth, but a very clean and attractive copy. Listed in Hubin, citing this edition and an Irwin edition of the same year; also noting the 1905 Ogilvie edit ion, published as: THE HOXTON MYSTERY. We have also encountered an Ogilvie edition published under the original title. Quite scarce in the first edition.  $75.00  

 

45..... Harding (Harry)  The Hawk of Rede.  London: Hodder and Stoughton, [1922].  Blue cloth lettered in black. Some shelf wear to corners and edges, tears in the top edge of four internal pages (quite long, into the text, but closed and not messy); otherwise quite a bright, very good copy. Not dated, but possibly the first editi on. Listed in Hubin, giving a date of 1922. This book was made into a silent film by Ideal in 1923 as: "Hutch Stirs 'Em Up".  An uncommon book.  $35.00

First edition.  Black decorative cloth stamped in blind and designed in red, lettered in gilt. Frontispiece & 2 plates. First two pages of text are loose, and the page edges show some wear as a result; otherwise, this is a very clean, bright and attractive copy. Mi ssed by Hubin, this is clearly a novel of murder and detection featuring Inspector Greysteel.  $50.00  

 

50..... Hook (S. Clarke)  Jack, Sam and Pete's Adventures in Africa.  London: Amalgamated, [ca.1910?]  Two identical copies of this book, bound together in purple cloth, the spine lettered in gilt. Pages are browned at edges, a few page corners folded a bit, otherwise fine. The binding shows a bit of shelf wear to edges, some scuffs to covers. Both c opies have the front and back covers bound in, but likely not the spines. Covers are in very fresh condition. The adventures of Jack, Sam and Pete were serialized in THE BOY'S FRIEND and THE MARVEL.  $45.00

A very nice, bright copy; bruised page edges on the fore-edge, a couple of slightly damaged margins. Romantic adventure taking place from 1690-1708. Dedicated to Wilkie Collins.  $50.00  

 

112.... Taylor (Judson R.) [pseudonym of Harlan Page Halsey]  Bruce Angelo. The City Detective.  NY: Street & Smith, (1887).  Rebound in modern plain wrappers, with a lettered spine label. Paper browned, a very good copy. Ads within indicate that this title was issued as No. 102 in the Magnet Detective Library. A similar title: "Bruce Angelo, the Old Time Detective" is lis ted in Hubin under 'Anonymous', citing only "Aldine" for a publisher, presumably referring to a British edition. Halsey also wrote as OLD SLEUTH.  $20.00  

 

113.... Taylor (Judson R.) [pseudonym of Harlan Page Halsey]  The Masked Detective or Outwitted by His Own Cunning. A Tale of Strange Mysteries.  NY: Street & Smith, (1888).  Rebound in modern plain wrappers, with a lettered spine label. Paper browned, some wear to first leaf, very good. One illustration. According to ads in another book, this title was issued as No. 82 in The Magnet Library. A similar title: The Masked Detective; or, The Dead Alive" is listed in Hubin under 'Anonymous', citing only "Aldine" for a publisher, presumably referring to a British edition. Halsey also wrote as OLD SLEUTH.  $20.00

116.... Terry (Eleanore S.)  The New Delilah.  London: Walter Scott, 1904. First Colonial edition.  Orange decorative cloth designed and lettered in black. Black coated end papers. Some rubbing and wear to spine, dust soiling to edges, but a very good copy. "Colonial Edition" is printed on the spine. A novel of a woman born out of wedlock, who mar ries a brutal aristocrat. She murders him, and later commits suicide. Not in Hubin. Uncommon.  $50.00  

 

117.... Thompson (Jim)  Texas By The Tail.  Greenwich: Fawcett/Gold Medal, (1965). First edition.  Original wrappers. Gold Medal book k1502. Slightly leaned, paper browned at edges, a bit of a crease where front cover opens, but quite a solid very good copy, not cracked anywhere.  $25.00  

 

118.... Thompson (Lloyd S.)  Hear Not My Steps.  NY: Abelard, (1953). First edition.  Grey cloth, spine designed and lettered in black. Small ink stamp and price on front end paper, otherwise a nice clean copy in a slightly worn dust jacket, some small nicks to edges and moderate dust soiling. Thompson was Drama Critic for the San Fr ancisco Examiner.  $20.00  

 

119.... Villiers-Stuart (Gerald)  The White Shrine.  Chicago: McClurg/London: Melrose, [ca.1912]. First American edition.  Red cloth lettered in white. 4 leaves of facsimile letters at front. Some shelf wear and rubbing of covers, much of white lettering is chipped away, some small internal stains, but a decent copy otherwise. Printed in England, evidently this is a US issue of the British edition (Melrose, 1912). Not listed in Hubin, but this looks to be a romantic bibliomystery. It concerns a woman novelist and a villanous playwrite, scandal, and a pseudonymous novel which is withdrawn by the publishers. Also pl enty of liquor, opium addiction, and the London literary scene. A scarce book.  $75.00

121.... Wainwright (John)  Their Evil Ways.  London: Macmillan, (1983). First edition.  Brown boards, spine lettered in gilt. Some denting of front board, but a basically fine copy in dust jacket, the page edges slightly browning.  $20.00  

 

122.... White (Fred M.)  The Five Knots. Illustrated.  London: Ward, Lock, 1910. First edition.  Red blind-stamped cloth, designed in white and lettered in gilt. Frontispiece and 2 plates. A bit loose, some old damp stains to front cover; still, an attractive, bright very good copy in general. A thriller concerning stolen treasure, murder, kidn apping. Listed in Hubin, who also mentions the American edition of 1910.  $40.00  

 

123.... White (Percy)  The Grip of the Bookmaker.  NY: Fenno/London: Hutchinson, 1901. First American edition.  Red cloth ruled and lettered in gilt. Slight fading of spine, but a bright and attractive copy. Listed (conditionally) in Hubin; this looks to be a society novel, in part concerning a gambling debt.  $25.00  

 

124.... Woods (Sarah)  Where Should He Die?  London: Macmillan, (1983). First edition.  Red boards, spine lettered in silver. Slightly leaned, otherwise a nice copy in the pictorial dust jacket. A Jenny Maitland case.  $20.00
